Do I need to book an airport lounge in advance?

Short answer: not always, but it's rarely a bad idea. Here's when walk-up genuinely works, and when you're taking a real risk of being turned away at the door.

When walk-up is usually fine

  • Off-peak travel times — mid-morning or mid-afternoon on a weekday, outside school holidays
  • Regional airports with lower overall passenger volume
  • Larger lounges with higher capacity (the bigger chains typically hold more guests than small independents)

When you're taking a real risk

  • Early morning departures — the single busiest window at almost every UK airport
  • School holidays and peak summer dates, especially at leisure-heavy airports like Stansted, Luton and Gatwick
  • Smaller, independent lounges with limited capacity — see our Gatwick North Terminal guide for an example of this in practice
  • Weekends during peak season

Why booking ahead is worth it even when you don't have to

It's usually cheaper

Advance pricing beats door pricing at most lounges — sometimes by a meaningful margin. Even if you're confident you'll get in on the day, pre-booking is close to a free discount. See our cheapest lounge access guide for more on this.

It removes the uncertainty

A "lounge full" sign at the door is a genuinely bad way to start a trip, especially if the lounge visit was part of the plan for a long layover or an early departure. Booking ahead costs nothing extra in flexibility for most bookings, and removes that risk entirely.

Thinking about Priority Pass?

Booking ahead saves money on a single visit. If you do it four or five times a year, a membership saves more — and removes the booking step entirely at the 43 UK lounges that accept Priority Pass.

It’s an annual membership, not a single ticket — it only pays for itself if you fly enough to use it more than a couple of times a year. Our break-even calculator does that sum on your own trips, at the lounge prices we’ve verified.

Frequently asked

Can I still book on the day if I change my mind?

Most lounges do accept walk-up bookings via app or at the desk, but availability isn't guaranteed and pricing is usually higher than pre-booking. Treat it as a fallback, not the plan.

Does Priority Pass or DragonPass need advance booking?

Generally no — membership access is typically walk-up, though some individual lounges request booking during peak periods even for members. Worth checking the specific lounge's current policy if you're travelling at a busy time.

What if my flight gets delayed after I've booked?

This depends on the specific booking's cancellation/flexibility terms, which vary by lounge — check before paying for a non-refundable rate if your schedule feels uncertain. Covered in more detail in our Lounge Pass review.
