Four Priority Pass visits a year, not a membership. The 4 included visits are worth about £155 at the £38.86 average walk-in price, against a £195 fee from year two. On lounges alone it does not pay for itself — the first year, which is free, is where the lounge value actually sits.
Priority Pass covers 43 of the 55 UK lounges we list, across 19 airports. See every one of them, with prices.
What American Express actually says
Quoted from the card’s own product page on americanexpress.com, checked 8 October 2026. We quote rather than paraphrase because the difference between “access” and “discounted access” is the whole story on this page.
x4 complimentary Priority Pass airport lounge visits.
You can use all 4 passes for yourself or share with a friend or family member you are travelling with.
Representative example as published by American Express: 85.8% APR variable, with a purchase rate of 29.1% p.a. variable, on an assumed credit limit of £1,200. Fee: £195 a year, £0 in the first year. Figures change — check the issuer’s own page before acting on anything here.
What the benefits list does not tell you
Four visits is four entries, not four trips
A return flight with one lounge visit at each end is two of your four. Take a companion in on the way out and that is two more. One holiday for two people, done, with nothing left for the rest of the year. This is the single most common misunderstanding about the card.
It is not a Priority Pass membership
You get visits, not a card that keeps working after they run out. Amex Platinum and the HSBC Premier cards give you an actual Priority Pass membership; this gives you four entries a year and then nothing. If you fly more than twice a year the maths stops working quickly.
The issuer’s own page disagrees with itself on coverage
The card summary says “up to 1,300 lounges at major airports around the world” and the benefits section on the same page says “over 1,300 airports globally”. Lounges and airports are not the same unit. We quote both rather than pick one.
Before you count on it
Check the lounge, not just the card
Every one of these cards works through a lounge network, and networks drop lounges. The question that actually matters is whether your airport’s lounge is in it on the day you fly — our Priority Pass list and DragonPass list both go lounge by lounge.
Availability is not the same as access
Priority Pass entry is subject to space. At a UK airport at 06:00 the lounge can be full regardless of what your card says, which is why pre-booking entitlements are worth more than they look.
Compare it against just paying
The average walk-in price across the 35 UK Priority Pass lounges we have verified is £38.86, and the cheapest departures lounge is £27. If you fly twice a year, paying at the door is usually cheaper than any annual fee on this site.
Or buy the membership directly
You do not need a credit card to hold Priority Pass — you can buy it outright, and our break-even calculator works out whether that beats paying per visit for the way you actually fly.
Frequently asked
How many lounge visits do you get with Amex Gold?
Four complimentary Priority Pass visits a year. American Express states you can use all four yourself or share them with someone travelling with you.
Is Amex Gold a Priority Pass membership?
No. It gives four Priority Pass visits a year rather than an ongoing membership. Once they are used, there is no lounge benefit left until the card renews.
Do the four Amex Gold passes cover a return trip for two?
Only just, and only once. Two people entering a lounge on the way out and again on the way back is four entries — the whole year’s allowance on a single holiday.
Does Amex Gold pay for itself on lounge visits?
Not on lounges alone. Four visits at the £38.86 average walk-in price across the Priority Pass lounges we have verified comes to about £155, against a £195 fee from year two. The first year is free, which is where the lounge value is clearest.
